Truth be told. Do some simple math here people. your average person weighs what, 130 pounds?? your average cross country horse in competing form is about 1000-1200 pounds. Do you really think these horses would be doing this if they didn't want to?

...first, then you should use a whip, then if needed strong bits, martingales and spurs. My horse is a lot more impulsive if I just carry a whip, and then if I feel like she might run out at a fence I will give her a quick tap to stop her - if I did this with my leg it would have no effect. If the horse is not cut or bruised there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH USING A WHIP WHATSOEVER. You might be very lucky with amazing horses that go off your leg perfectly but what if you don't?

@cowgirlslovetogallop and @BarrelsPolesandJack and others: Whilst I agree that using whips excessively is abusive to the horse, can someone please tell me how giving a horse a quick tap on the shoulder or hindquarters with a bit of soft leather is any worse than kicking the horse on its soft belly skin with your hard feet?? and @BarrelsPolesandJack what if one doesn't want to barrel race? These attitudes are immature and, frankly ignorant. Use of the legs, hands and voice should be learned...

Why do people hate so much? These riders aren't bad or needing to learn "the basics." Shut up. I'd like to see any of you who are criticizing do this. After you show or event at this level, then maybe you'll have some authority to make the rude comments you already have left...unless of course you're already better than Karen O'conner, but, I really doubt you are. Man props to these riders! Cross Country is the daddy of horse sports, but I'll stick with show jumping when the fences get big :P

im 19 and only just learning to ride even though i have loved horses all my life. a few weeks ago i found out that eventing is the most dangerous sport in the worl... LOL and i wanted to do it at this level when i was younger!! good video though :)

Im riding cross country and I know how it feels when horse fall down on u. Its piece of shit. but still, ive fell of thousands times and broke my bones dozen of time. but im still riding it. its my life and my horse, Lickya, LOVES to jump different obstacles. she never havent give up, she never refuse or run by the obstacle. she always goes right to it. shes like awesome. my trainer has wondered where i got horse like that. shes fwb. :3

@cowgirlslovetogallop Well, I will say this and be through with: if you can't get your horse to run without the aid of whips, then you're not running with the right horse. Your horse should do whatever you ask of him regardless. There's no need for whips. People win barrel races all the time without them.
